Pfeffer explains that the title "What were they thinking?!" comes from his response to what he reads almost daily about the actions of leaders and organization. They seem like "something drawn from a Dilbert cartoon".

Are you someone who does not look forward to going to work? Are there people in your office who backbite and gossip? Are there people who throw cold water on every new idea you have? Do they steal your ideas when they can? Are there people who get on your nerves or frighten you with their explosive tempers or sharp tongues?

The perpetrators are not untalented people; for the most part they are hardworking, serious people, often expending enormous amounts of time and effort trying to do a good job. The book is not focused on why they do so many things that are incorrect, but rather describes their decisions in a way that makes the errors crystal clear saving you the bother of making the same mistakes yourself.

There are twenty-eight examples that will alert you to errors you could make, or make you squirm because you have already made them. The range is broad and I cannot think of anyone who won't find the majority of the examples very relevant to their work.

Is your manager bad tempered or unpredictable? Is your manager undependable, unreachable or simply not the sharpest tool in the shed? Does s/he play favourites?

If this describes your workplace, firstly, you are not alone, and secondly, you should come and hear what Peter Morris suggests... His book is packed with sound advice.
